3 practical tips for decision-making

It’s almost impossible to make the “right” decision where situations are complicated in a dynamic environment. Our 3 tips should help you at least find the smartest solution.

1. During the decision-making process, you work as a whole: body, mind, heart and spirit. Making responsible and careful decisions requires a holistic approach:
  • How do you feel physically when thinking about making a decision?
  • How do you act rationally when making decisions?
  • What does your intuition tell you?
  • Do you feel strong emotions, including desire or dislike?
2. When making intelligent, maybe even wise decisions, it is vital to use a rational model or play with emotions. Author Suzy Welch has developed a very simple methodology to consider the consequences of our decisions in the long term. Simply answer these three questions: What consequences will my decision have in
  • 10 minutes?
  • 10 months?
  • 10 years?
3. Consciously examine the various aspects which play a role in your decision. Take your time! Your goal is to find optimal balance between the different problem areas. The scope of the decision plays a key role here, of course. You may choose spontaneously between pizza or pasta. But when it comes to reaching a decision about the purchase of a company or hiring a new manager, the situation is somewhat different. Remember: Try to keep calm when making important decisions. Otherwise your decision-making will be impaired by reason (blind trust in figures) or emotions (anxiety, desire) and you risk making the wrong decision!
