As a
project manager, you are responsible for ensuring that the team you are in
charge of reaches the project goals. This puts you in a managerial role even if
you are not actually authorized to issue directives. However, you will find it
difficult to manage your employees if you are not convincing in your management
role. With the following 3 strategies you will show that you are a charismatic
manager:
Show your presence in other management groups.
- Gain access to management meetings
Say that you need
information for your project or that you want to report on your
project. At least have your name added to the distribution list for the
respective minutes. Then your name appears among the high society.
- Use other managers' rules of play
Every
time you come into contact with line managers pay attention to how they
act, their presentation, how they speak and how they dress. Adapt. Make
sure that you do not act like a foreign body when you are among
managers, look as if you belong there.
- Get yourself status symbols.
Observe
which symbols other managers use to make their status clear. Request
status symbols from the customer of the project that you are not
actually entitled to in your official position. Use plausible arguments
why you need these status symbols, with reference to the project
– the customer will find it hard to refuse. Your employees will
be impressed if you are able to get these "trophies". These symbols
could be a company parking spot, not having to clock on at a fixed
time, budgets for food and beverages, or certain access rights to the
PC systems.
If, as a project manager, you use all the strategies and actions described in
this article, you will see that people listen to you and that you can manage
successfully even if you are not authorized to issue directives. It is
important that you are self-confident as a manager and that you convince others
with your competency.
