Nearly 60% of all persons employed in Germanyworked in small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in 2005. This is the result of a study
the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) conducted in such areas as
industry, construction, trade, the hotel and restaurant industry, and
selected service branches. The study covered approximately 80% of all
enterprises. On the whole, more than 99% of the enterprises engaged in
the above areas were small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). They
generated nearly 35% of total turnover, had a share of 40% in gross
investments in tangible goods and achieved 46% of total gross value
added.
