- Since the start of 2008 Messe München has only been using environmentally friendly FSC paper for its printed matter
- A further contribution to the ecology concept of Messe München
Messe München has taken a leading role in environmental protection for many years. Even during the planning and construction of the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, many aspects of climate protection were taken into account, and this approach is of course continuing during its operation. The energy-efficient design of the halls means that in daylight hours during set-up and dismantling periods, it is possible to manage entirely without artificial lighting.
The 73-hectare site has 125,000 square metres of green space, which is 17 percent of the total. In addition the outer walls of the halls have plants growing up them and all roofs below a height of 16 metres are planted.
On top of the centre is one of the largest roof-mounted photovoltaic systems in the world; with this Messe München produces around 2.7 megawatts (MW) of power per year, real proof of the company´s commitment to innovative environmental technology. Already these various measures to protect the climate and the environment are resulting in an annual saving of approximately 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at Messe München.
In addition the programme of events organised by Messe München includes globally respected trade fairs dedicated wholly or in part to the field of environmental and climate protection. These include IFAT, International Trade Fair for Water – Sewage – Refuse – Recycling; BAU, International Trade Fair for Architecture – Materials – Systems; Electronica – components/systems/ applications (Green Electronics), Productronica – International Trade Fair for Electronics Production (Green Electronics, photovoltaic manufacture), oils+fats, International Trade Fair for the Production and Processing of Oils and Fats made from Renewable Resources; and the guest event Intersolar – Trade Fair for Solar Technology.
Now, Messe München is adding another aspect to this contribution – since the start of 2008 it is using only FSC paper in its printed materials. FSC paper is an environmentally friendly product that bears the logo of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This logo shows the end consumer that the wood used for the paper either comes from sustainable forests or was derived in such as way that protects our forest resources.
The protected FSC seal of quality is awarded only to companies that conform with the rules of the FSC; regular checks take place. An FSC certificate guarantees that the company to which it is awarded has been found to operate in line with the FSC standards, through all stages of production – from forest management to wood cutting, processing and transport, even through to sales. By deciding to only use FSC paper for all its printed material, Messe München is making another important contribution to its ecology concept.
