Display technology: bright sports for German companies
Germany holds a good position in the lighting technology field of photonics. "We have access to the market and are leaders in technology," explains Prof. Andreas Tünnermann, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena.
German "Gründer" prize 2008 for life's work: Berthold Leibinger
On 17 June 2008, Berthold Leibinger was awarded the German 2008 "Gründer" prize in recognition of his life's work. Rising from a mere apprentice to the owner of TRUMPF, Berthold Leibinger believed in the innovation that was the laser, he worked tenaciously to give lasers a substantial position in a mechanical engineering company that was steeped in tradition and in the process made the company the global market leader and revolutionized an entire industry.
STED microscopy facilitates imaging from inside a cell for the first time
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and the "nanometre-scale microscopy" excellence cluster have successfully used STED microscopy to film the first nanometre-scale video of the inside of a living cell. With up to 28 frames per second and 4 times greater resolution than conventional optical microscopes, they were able to follow the rapid movements of tiny cell building blocks live. This innovation will allow scientists to better understand the processes by which signals are transmitted between nerve cells and to better address other issues in biological and medical research.
